The Appraisal District Board of Directors’ Role in the Property Tax System
The local property tax system follows the principle of “checks and balances.” Appraisal District Directors’ role within this system is to hire the chief appraiser, approve the CAD budget, select a CAD depository, approve CAD contracts, and set general procedures for Director operations.
Appraisal District Directors have no authority to appraise property, set property values, review property values, set appraisal methods, or appoint members to serve on the Appraisal Review Board.
